What Is an FCU Coil?

A fan coil unit coil is the heat exchanger tucked inside every FCU, the compact, self-contained unit that gives a single room or zone its own temperature control instead of relying on one central system for an entire building.

Central AHU systems condition air for a whole floor or building. FCUs work differently. Each one serves a single room, apartment, or zone, and inside it sits a coil, usually a chilled water coil or a direct expansion coil. That coil is the part actually doing the work. Air passes over it, heat transfers in or out, and the room reaches temperature.

When the coil fails, the unit fails. It does not matter how new the fan is or how clean the filter is. A degraded coil means a room that will not cool.
