What Is a DX Coil?
A direct expansion coil, commonly called a DX evaporator coil, is a heat exchanger in which refrigerant enters the coil at low pressure and evaporates inside the copper tubes, absorbing heat from the air passing across the coil.
Unlike chilled water coils, which use water as an intermediate medium between the refrigeration plant and the coil, DX coils are part of the primary refrigerant circuit.
DX coils are not a single-application product. They are used across split and ducted-split air- conditioning systems, rooftop packaged units, air handling units with DX circuits, fan coil units, supermarket refrigeration display cases, cold room evaporators, and custom OEM cooling assemblies.
Although these coils generally use copper tubes and aluminium fins, their design varies according to the application. Circuiting, tube diameter, fin spacing, row depth, face area, refrigerant, operating temperature, airflow, and defrost requirements must all be considered.
